Cappagh v Clane
Senior League Camogie – Monday April 19th
The Clane Senior Camogie team got their 2010 senior league campaign off to a great start the week previous by beating Maynooth in a well contested game. With this success fresh in their minds, they would have went to Cappagh to continue their success with a win over the Cappagh girls.
Cappagh started the better of the two teams, with Clane goalkeeper, Ciara Byrne having to make two fine saves to stop them from opening the scoring. Cappagh eventually got the opening score of the game with a well taken free, from Cappagh wing forward.
Clane got into the game then and the Cappagh goalie in turn had to make a great save to stop a well taken shot from corner forward Grainne Gaffney. Clane then opened their account with an accurate sideline from Louise Conlon going to Christine O’Reilly who promptly stuck it over the bar. After this opening score, Clane then followed it up with a free from Melissa Lyons and another score from play from full forward Christine O’Reilly. On super form, Christine then latched onto a ball on the sideline and fired it over the bar from an acute angle. Great pressure then from Niamh Foley saw Clane get a 45, which saw Melissa Lyons, the in-form free taker put it over the bar. Cappagh followed this with a score and just before half time, Melissa Lyons scored from another free making the scoreline in Clane’s favour, 0-6 to 0-2.
The second half saw Clane start where they left off with a great solo effort from Melissa Lyons getting Clane a point, from play.
The next ten minutes saw a good spell for the girls from Cappagh and they put another free on the board, which was tapped over by Niamh followed by two goals in quick succession by Orla Mullaly, putting them ahead.
Clane however were not to be outdone and came back with a super ball in from Shona Nolan into substitute Sinead Healy who put it away for Clane’s first goal of the game. This put Clane one point ahead, and an exciting few minutes left to play.
Clane’s backs were resilient in the dying minutes where they fended off the pressure form the Cappagh forwards, Claire Flynn in particular, putting in a great display in full back. However with the last strike of the game, Cappagh scored a point to make the game all square.
Final Score – Cappagh 2-4, Clane 1-7
A well fought game, which saw Melissa Lyons, Christine O’Reilly, Louise Conlon and Claire Flynn as the best for Clane,
Substitutes used: Maria Christensen for Claire Byrne
Sinead Healy for Niamh Foley
Jade Hinch for Dannielle Redmond
