Celbridge defeat Clane in Camogie Senior Championship
Referee: Alan LaGrue
Venue: Clane
Time: 06.45pm
In what was to be a very exciting match, Celbridge knocked Clane out of the Camogie Senior Championship 4-04 to 1-06.
Celbridge got off to a good start when Susie O’Carroll pounced on a loose ball and stuck it in the back of the net. Clane responded in the most emphatic fashion with Christine O’Reilly setting up a great goal for Paula Malcomson, but they had little time to celebrate as Susie O’Carroll took the ball and struck it over the bar. Clane did not have time to fight back as the ball landed in the Celbridge forward line and Laurie McDermott hit it low into the back of the net, giving Celbridge a four point lead. Paula Malcomson responded with a well aimed point, narrowing the gap. Susie O’Carroll scored another two goals before the half-time whistle, when the scoreline read 4-01 to 1-01.
Clane dominated the 2nd half of the match. Yvonne Lyons – who came on for Deirdre Grace – scored a great point from play, followed by another point from Ciara Smullen and a well struck long range point from Lisa O’Connor. Celbridge answered with three points from Susie O’Carroll widening the gap between the teams to eight points. Ciara Smullen scored two more points from frees. Clane, who fought hard through the whole match, were the better team; but missed many goal chances, making Celbridge the victors on the day.
